Project Description

Located on a corner block, it was important for this house to present a welcoming façade to both streets. We created a gable on each end of the ‘L’ shaped footprint, creating an ‘embracing’ street presence. The slope of the block allowed the house to be designed on two levels, with about 500mm difference between the two. The bedroom ‘wing’ is on the upper level. Instead of stepping the roof down to the lower section which houses the living areas, we kept the roof and ceiling at the same height, which gives a lovely high ceiling for the living areas. The main dining and lounge areas are separated by a bookshelf room divider with classical columns, giving each area its own identity but maintaining the open planning of the space. Both areas spill out onto the private alfresco area. Through to the kitchen which has a small breakfast nook, the nook opens out to the east facing front morning verandah, kept private from the road by tucking it in behind the garage gable end and keeping it on the lower level. The lovely big kitchen focusses on the generous central island and further to the bay window on the end overlooking the backyard. A mud room slots in next to the generous pantry providing access to the garage and through the laundry out to the formal veggie patch. The rear alfresco verandah has a window pass-through from the kitchen for BBQ’s and flows down two sets of garden steps to the different levels of the rear garden. A lovely little oasis in pretty Bundanoon!
